Can Whey Protein Cause Acne?

2 October 20263 min read

If you have acne and regularly consume whey protein, you may have wondered whether the two are connected.

The relationship between whey protein and acne is possible, but it is not universal. Some studies and clinical observations have reported an association between whey protein supplementation and acne, particularly in individuals who are already acne-prone.

Whey protein is derived from milk. Dairy products may influence pathways involved in acne, including insulin and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) signalling. These pathways can affect sebaceous gland activity and keratinisation, both of which play a role in acne development.

However, this does not mean that everyone who consumes whey protein will develop acne. Acne is a multifactorial condition influenced by genetics, hormones, sebum production, follicular plugging, inflammation and lifestyle factors.

If you notice that your acne consistently worsens after starting whey protein, consider discussing this with your dermatologist. Depending on your nutritional requirements and acne severity, a trial of stopping whey protein for several weeks may help determine whether there is a relationship.

It is important not to unnecessarily eliminate nutritious foods or protein sources without a reason. If you need protein supplementation, alternatives may be considered depending on your diet and individual requirements.

Also remember that acne should not automatically be blamed on protein supplements. New or worsening acne may have other triggers, including hormonal fluctuations, medications, cosmetics or occlusive skincare products.

If acne is persistent, painful or leaving scars, appropriate treatment is more important than simply eliminating individual foods.

Bottom line: whey protein may worsen acne in some susceptible individuals, but it is not a universal cause of acne. If you suspect a connection, look for a consistent pattern and discuss it with your dermatologist rather than making unnecessary dietary restrictions.
