Chemical Peeling for Dark Neck: Can It Treat Acanthosis Nigricans?

17 September 20263 min read

What causes acanthosis nigricans?

Acanthosis nigricans is frequently associated with insulin resistance and metabolic conditions. It may occur in people who are overweight or have conditions such as prediabetes or diabetes, although it can also occur in people without these problems.

Certain medications, hormonal conditions and, rarely, other underlying disorders can also be associated with acanthosis nigricans.

Therefore, treating only the pigmentation may not address the underlying cause.

Can chemical peeling remove dark neck pigmentation?

Chemical peels may help improve pigmentation and skin texture in selected patients with acanthosis nigricans. A dermatologist chooses the type and concentration of peeling agent according to the patient's skin type, degree of pigmentation and skin condition.

Chemical peeling works by producing controlled exfoliation of the superficial layers of skin and can help reduce uneven pigmentation over a series of treatments.

However, a peel is not a permanent cure for acanthosis nigricans. If insulin resistance or another underlying condition is contributing to the pigmentation, addressing that factor is an important part of management.

Is chemical peeling safe for dark skin?

Chemical peels can be performed safely in Indian and other darker skin types when appropriately selected and performed by a trained professional. However, overly aggressive peels can cause irritation and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, which may make pigmentation worse.

This is why home-use strong acids or unregulated "dark neck removal" treatments should be avoided.

When should you see a dermatologist?

If you have recently developed a dark, thick or velvety neck, especially if the pigmentation is also present in the underarms or groin, dermatological evaluation is advisable. Your dermatologist may assess for acanthosis nigricans and determine whether further evaluation is appropriate.

At DermcareMD Skin & Hair Clinic by Dr Neha Athalye in Kothrud, Pune, treatment for dark neck pigmentation may include appropriate chemical peeling along with management of contributing factors.
