Diaper Dermatitis

29 May 20262 min read

Diaper dermatitis, commonly known as diaper rash, is one of the most frequent skin problems seen in infants and toddlers. It appears as redness, irritation, or rashes in the diaper area and can make babies uncomfortable and fussy. In most cases, diaper dermatitis develops because the skin remains exposed to moisture, friction, urine, or stool for prolonged periods. Warm and humid conditions inside the diaper can further damage the delicate baby skin barrier.

Common symptoms of diaper rash include red patches, mild swelling, irritation, peeling skin, and discomfort during diaper changes. Sometimes, secondary fungal infections such as candida infection can occur, leading to bright red rashes with small satellite lesions around the main rash. Certain factors like diarrhea, antibiotic use, infrequent diaper changes, or sensitive skin may increase the risk of diaper dermatitis.

Treatment of diaper dermatitis focuses on keeping the skin clean, dry, and protected. Frequent diaper changes, gentle cleansing with lukewarm water, and allowing diaper-free time can help improve healing. Barrier creams containing zinc oxide or petroleum jelly protect the skin from further irritation. In cases of fungal infection, antifungal creams may be prescribed by a dermatologist. Harsh soaps, fragrances, and tight diapers should be avoided.

Parents should seek medical advice if the rash becomes severe, painful, develops pus, fever, or does not improve with routine care. Some skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, nutritional deficiencies, or bacterial infections may mimic persistent diaper rashes and thus require expert evaluation.

Early diagnosis and proper skincare can prevent complications and help babies remain comfortable. If your child is suffering from recurrent or severe diaper rash, consult DermcareMD Skin and Hair Clinic by Dr Neha Athalye for expert paediatric dermatology care and personalized treatment.
