How to Maintain a Food Diary if You Suspect a Food Allergy

2 October 20263 min read

If you notice hives, itching, swelling, stomach symptoms or other reactions after eating certain foods, you may wonder whether a food allergy is responsible. A food diary can help identify patterns, but it should not be used to diagnose an allergy on its own.

Start by recording everything you eat and drink, including small snacks, beverages, sauces, packaged foods and supplements. Note the ingredients whenever possible. Alongside this, record the time of eating and the time when symptoms appeared.
Describe your symptoms clearly—for example, hives, itching, swelling of the lips or eyelids, vomiting, abdominal pain, wheezing or breathing difficulty. Also mention the severity and how long the symptoms lasted. Record any medications taken and whether they helped.

It is also useful to note other factors around the episode. Exercise, infections, alcohol, stress, painkillers such as NSAIDs and certain medications can sometimes influence allergic reactions or urticaria.

Importantly, not every episode of hives is caused by food allergy. In fact, chronic urticaria—hives occurring repeatedly for more than six weeks—rarely has a food allergy component. Unnecessarily eliminating multiple foods can lead to nutritional deficiencies and make everyday eating unnecessarily restrictive.

If you notice a consistent relationship between a particular food and symptoms, take your food diary to a dermatologist or allergist. Your doctor can determine whether the history is suggestive of food allergy and whether testing or a medically supervised elimination or food challenge is appropriate.

Never deliberately consume a suspected allergen to “test” yourself, particularly if you have previously experienced facial swelling, breathing difficulty, dizziness or a severe reaction.

A well-maintained food diary is therefore best viewed as a tool to identify patterns—not a substitute for medical evaluation.
