Lipoma: Causes, Symptoms, Treatment and When to See a Doctor

31 August 20263 min read

What does a lipoma feel like?
A typical lipoma presents as a soft, smooth, mobile lump under the skin. It is usually painless and grows slowly. The skin overlying a lipoma generally appears normal.
Most lipomas are harmless and do not require treatment if they are small, stable and asymptomatic.

What causes lipomas?
The exact cause of most lipomas is unknown. Some people may have multiple lipomas, and certain forms can run in families. Having a lipoma does not mean that a person has cancer.

When should a lipoma be evaluated?
A new or enlarging lump should ideally be examined by a doctor rather than being diagnosed based solely on its appearance.
Medical evaluation becomes particularly important if a lump is:
Rapidly increasing in size
Painful or tender
Firm or fixed to deeper tissues
Located deep beneath the skin
Associated with changes in the overlying skin
A dermatologist or surgeon may recommend ultrasound or other imaging when the diagnosis is uncertain or the lesion has unusual features.

How is a lipoma treated?
Treatment is usually unnecessary unless the lipoma causes discomfort, cosmetic concern or functional problems. The most definitive treatment is surgical excision, in which the entire lipoma is removed.

In selected cases, other techniques may be considered, but surgical removal remains the standard approach for a symptomatic or bothersome lipoma.
It is important not to attempt to squeeze, puncture or remove a lump at home.
