Oral Lichen Planus: Chronic Inflammatory Condition

21 May 20262 min read

Oral lichen planus is a chronic inflammatory condition affecting the mucous membranes inside the mouth. It presents as white, lacy patches, red swollen tissues, or painful ulcers.

The exact cause is unknown, but it is believed to be an immune-mediated condition. Stress, certain medications, and systemic illnesses may act as triggers.

Common symptoms include:
Burning sensation
Sensitivity to spicy foods
Painful sores
White streaks inside cheeks
While some cases are asymptomatic, others can significantly affect quality of life.

Diagnosis is usually clinical but may require biopsy to rule out other conditions.
Management includes:
Topical corticosteroids
Immunomodulatory agents
Good oral hygiene
Avoiding triggers like tobacco and spicy foods
Regular follow-up is important, as a small percentage of cases may undergo malignant transformation over time.
Early diagnosis and proper management can help control symptoms effectively.
