Prurigo Nodularis: Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

25 September 20263 min read

What does prurigo nodularis look like?

The condition typically presents with multiple itchy, firm nodules, often occurring on the arms, legs and trunk. The lesions may have crusting, excoriations or thickened skin because of repeated scratching.

The itching can be severe and may interfere with sleep, concentration and daily activities.

What causes prurigo nodularis?

The exact cause is complex and involves abnormal signalling between the nervous system and immune system. In some people, PN may occur along with other medical conditions, including certain skin diseases and systemic disorders.

However, it is important to remember that not every itchy nodule is prurigo nodularis. A dermatologist may need to examine the lesions and, in selected cases, perform a skin biopsy or investigations to establish the diagnosis.

How is prurigo nodularis treated?

Treatment aims to reduce itching, control inflammation and break the itch-scratch cycle. Depending on severity, treatment may include topical medications, intralesional injections, phototherapy or systemic treatments. Newer targeted treatments may also be considered for appropriate patients.

Because scratching perpetuates the condition, controlling itch is an important part of successful treatment.

If you have persistent intensely itchy skin nodules that do not settle, consult a dermatologist for diagnosis and personalised treatment. For expert skin and hair care, consult DermcareMD Skin and Hair Clinic and Dr Neha Athalye.
