Sunburn: Causes, Symptoms, Treatment and Prevention

25 September 20263 min read

What does sunburn look and feel like?

Sunburn commonly causes redness, warmth, burning or stinging and tenderness of the exposed skin. More severe sunburn may cause swelling and fluid-filled blisters. Symptoms may become noticeable several hours after sun exposure and can worsen over the following day.

People with lighter skin are more prone to visible sunburn, but Indian and darker skin can also develop sun damage and sunburn, even when redness is less obvious.

How is sunburn treated?

For mild sunburn, treatment focuses on soothing the skin and maintaining hydration. Cool compresses, gentle moisturisers and adequate fluid intake may provide relief. Avoid further sun exposure until the skin has healed.

Do not peel or break blisters yourself, as this can increase the risk of infection and scarring.

Severe sunburn with extensive blistering, significant swelling, fever, vomiting, dizziness or dehydration may require medical attention.

How can you prevent sunburn?
Prevention is the best approach. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen, preferably SPF 30 or higher, and reapply when required, especially after sweating or swimming. Hats, protective clothing and seeking shade during intense sunlight can provide additional protection.

Repeated UV exposure can contribute not only to sunburn but also to premature skin ageing, pigmentation and skin cancer risk.

If you develop severe or recurrent sunburn, consult a dermatologist for appropriate assessment and advice on sun protection.
