Telogen Effluvium

15 June 20262 min read

Telogen effluvium is one of the most common causes of diffuse hair fall in both men and women. It occurs when a large number of hair follicles prematurely enter the resting phase of the hair growth cycle, leading to excessive shedding.

Patients usually notice increased hair fall while combing, washing, or on pillows and clothing. Hair thinning is generally diffuse rather than patchy. Common triggers include stress, illness, high fever, surgery, childbirth, rapid weight loss, nutritional deficiencies, thyroid disorders, certain medications, and emotional stress.

Hair shedding typically begins two to three months after the triggering event. Fortunately, telogen effluvium is usually reversible once the underlying cause is addressed. However, persistent hair fall can cause significant anxiety and affect self-esteem.

Diagnosis involves detailed history, scalp examination, and blood investigations to identify nutritional deficiencies, thyroid abnormalities, anaemia, or hormonal issues. Treatment focuses on correcting the underlying trigger. Nutritional supplementation, stress management, and proper hair care are often recommended.

Patients should avoid unnecessary hair treatments, harsh chemicals, and excessive heat styling during recovery. A balanced diet rich in protein, iron, zinc, and vitamins plays an important role in hair regrowth.

Most patients notice improvement within a few months, although complete recovery may take six to twelve months. Early evaluation helps rule out other causes of hair loss such as androgenetic alopecia or alopecia areata.
