What Is Radiofrequency? Safe Removal of Skin Tags, Warts and Moles

17 September 20263 min read

How does radiofrequency remove skin growths?

During an RF procedure, the dermatologist uses a fine electrode to deliver controlled energy to the targeted lesion. The heat destroys or separates the unwanted tissue while limiting damage to the surrounding skin.

Depending on the type, size and location of the lesion, RF can be used for skin tag removal, wart removal and removal of selected benign moles. The procedure is generally quick and is performed under local anaesthesia when required.

Is radiofrequency safe for skin tags and warts?

When performed by a qualified dermatologist after appropriate diagnosis, RF can be a safe and effective method for removing many benign skin growths. It is particularly useful for small skin tags and some warts.

However, not every growth should simply be cauterised. A lesion that appears unusual, is changing in size or colour, bleeds, or has other suspicious features may require dermatological examination and sometimes a skin biopsy before removal.

Can moles be removed by radiofrequency?

Some clinically diagnosed benign moles can be removed using an appropriate RF technique. However, moles need greater caution because certain pigmented lesions may require histopathological examination.

Your dermatologist may therefore recommend surgical excision with a biopsy rather than RF when examination suggests that the entire lesion should be removed and examined under a microscope.

What happens after RF removal?

A small crust or scab may develop at the treatment site. It is important not to pick it. The area should be kept clean and protected according to your dermatologist's instructions. Healing time varies depending on the size and location of the lesion.
