What Should You Look for in Baby Skincare Products?

2 October 20263 min read

Baby skin is delicate, but that does not mean it needs a complicated skincare routine. In most healthy babies, simple is better.

When choosing skincare products, look for gentle, baby-safe formulations designed for sensitive skin. A basic routine generally needs only a mild cleanser, a moisturiser and sunscreen when appropriate for age and sun exposure. You do not need multiple creams, lotions, oils and serums.

Try to avoid products with strong fragrances, as fragrance can irritate sensitive skin. If your baby has eczema-prone or very sensitive skin, fragrance-free products are preferable. You may also choose to avoid unnecessary preservatives and ingredients that are more likely to irritate sensitive skin, including parabens if you prefer a simpler formulation.

Some traditional ingredients are not necessarily suitable simply because they are “natural.” Camphor-containing products should be avoided in babies, and mustard oil is best avoided as a routine baby massage oil because it can irritate the skin.

Bathing also does not need to involve extensive cleansing. Use a mild baby-safe soap or body wash sparingly, particularly on areas that actually need cleansing. Overwashing can strip the skin's natural protective barrier.

Similarly, shampoo should be baby-safe and used minimally, according to how much cleansing the scalp actually needs. There is no need to shampoo every day unless there is a specific reason.

Baby skincare does not need to be complicated. Choose gentle products, use them sparingly and avoid unnecessary ingredients.

For dry skin, a bland moisturiser applied regularly can help maintain the skin barrier.
